FIREARM LAWS &REGULATIONS

CONNECTICUT
CONCEALED CARRY

Connecticut has one of the more varied concealed carry laws. It is up to local law enforcement who gets a permit (May-Issue).
Applications to gain a permit are based on what is known as a ‘suitability clause’. There are two steps involved, one application at the local level and one at the state level.

OPEN CARRY

MOTOR VEHICLE CARRY

Must have a permit to have a gun or firearm in your vehicle.
Cannot leave a handgun in an unattended vehicle unless it is in a locked glove compartment, locked safe, or in the trunk.

NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT (NFA) FIREARMS

Machine guns are legal, as long as they do not select-fire.
Legal in Connecticut:
Suppressors (silencers)
Short Barreled Shotguns
Short Barreled Rifles

HUNTING

Handguns and rifles, any caliber, are prohibited on state-leased land and permit-required hunting areas.
Firearms with .22 caliber bullets or larger are prohibited on state owned land.

FIREARM TRANSFERS & SALES

Buying a handgun from a private party includes a background check, done through a licensed gun dealer.
A Connecticut Pistol Permit (CTPP) or Certificate of Eligibility is also required for purchasing a handgun in Connecticut.
Gun shows require a background check to purchase a firearm.
There is not a minimum age to possess a long gun.
You must be 18 to buy a long gun, and 21 to buy a handgun.
You must be 21 in order to buy or sell a semi-automatic firearm with at least 5 rounds.
The number of firearms per month that can be purchased is unlimited.

AMMUNITION REGULATIONS

In Connecticut, you must be 18 to purchase ammo.
You must have a Certificate of Eligibility or have a carry permit in order to purchase ammo.
