FIREARM LAWS &REGULATIONS

ILLINOIS
CONCEALED CARRY

In Illinois, you must obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun.

OPEN CARRY

The open carry of a firearm is unlawful except under certain exceptions.

MOTOR VEHICLE CARRY

You must have a FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card to carry a firearm in your car or vehicle.
The firearm must be unloaded.
The firearm must be in a container, case, carrying box or shipping box.

NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT (NFA) FIREARMS

Silencers (suppressors), shotguns with a short barrel, and automatic firearms are banned in Illinois.

HUNTING

You may carry a handgun while hunting if you have a concealed carry license, or if you are an off-duty law officer.

FIREARM TRANSFERS & SALES

Firearms need not be registered.
Waiting Periods:
Handguns - 72 hours
Long Guns – 24 hours
If you do not have a concealed carry permit, then you need to get a FOID card to possess firearms.
You must be 21 years of age to obtain a FOID card.
You must be 18 years of age to possess a handgun in Illinois.
No transfers or sales of handguns to those under 18 years of age is allowed.
The transfer or sale of firearms to another must include either a Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) card or a concealed carry license from the transferee.
There are no restrictions on the number of firearms bought at one time.

AMMUNITION REGULATIONS

You must be 21 years of age to purchase ammo.
If you do not have a concealed carry permit, then you need to acquire a FOID card to possess or purchase ammunition.
The seller of ammo needs to verify the FOID card of the buyer, and keep a record of it for 10 years.
You must be 21 years of age to obtain a FOID card.
The transfer of ammo to another must include either a Firearms Owners Identification card (FOID) or a concealed carry license from the transferee.
Selling, offering or transferring the following ammunition is unlawful:
Armor piercing bullets
Dragons breath shotgun shells
Bolo shells
Flechette shells
